The grounds of the
old Gerstle family mansion were donated to the City of San Rafael as
a public park in the early 1930's. The antiquated play equipment had
been gradually removed for safety reasons until only one piece remained.
In 1988, the Gerstle Park Fund was created by a group of concerned neighbors
to raise money for a new playground. Pedersen Associates helped the community
acquire grants and private contributions by documenting and promoting
citizen's efforts while designing the new playground. The playground
is designed to improve access and increase play value while reflecting
the historic character of its surroundings. Its sand filled terraces
are wrapped by a stone bench wall that protects adjacent trees and contains
the new play equipment designed for safety, diversity and interaction
between children, friends and parents.
